Yachting is very much like camping. Obviously there’s a lot more to sailing than just pitching a tent. There are minor technicalities such as hoisting the sails, helming the boat, utilising the wind to sail from place to place and navigating using the stars, the sun or a marine gps.
But it has some very obvious similarities. It’s a transient or nomadic existence, moving from one place to the next as you desire. You just rock up in a sheltered bay or safe harbour and enjoy camping afloat. Everything you need for a comfortable night’s sleep is on board; sleeping bags, camping lanterns, torches, plastic plates and cups. In many respects a yacht is practically a large tent on water.
It’s no wonder that campers and yachties share certain similarities. Both groups are self sufficient, enjoy the freedom of their adventures and have a respect for and ultimate appreciation for the great outdoors. Yacht camping… now that’s something to aspire to!
