I’ve recently been trying to decide whether or not to buy a family camping tent. My campervan is looking a bit battered and worse for wear so I may well have to sell it this year and go back to traditional camping methods. My old one man tent is out of the picture thanks to the addition of a small child to our family.

On a recent camping trip to the Lizard in Cornwall, some mates came with their kids. They’d splashed out the day before and bought an enormous family camping tent which could give them enough room to sleep, play and chill out if the weather turned nasty. Due its size, I was convinced there’d be some huge rows as it went up, but it was done without any divorce proceedings in sight. It was fantastic, plenty of space for their camping chairs and camping kitchen. It actually looked pretty civilised. When it was all set up, it looked like a home away from home.

The weather, in fact, was beautiful and balmy and we kicked back drinking beers in the porch of their large tent and watching the sunset over Kynance Cove. Idyllic!
